Excerpt from: From My Life. When we have grown up, we usually remember of our earliest childhood only the moments that stand out the most. True, I am not yet grown up, hardly have the years of childhood and boyhood behind me, and yet so much has already slipped from my memory and the little that I know about them I have probably retained only by means of tradition. The sequence of years rushes past my gaze like a confusing dream. Therefore it is impossible for me to establish the facts of the first ten years of my life. Nevertheless, some things are clear and vivid within my soul and these, along with those that are vague and gloomy, I will combine into a portrait. Yet it is always instructive to consider the gradual education of the mind and heart and in this connection the almightly guidance of God! — I was born in Röcken near Lützen on Oct. 15, 1844 and received in holy baptism the name Friedrich Wilhelm. My father1 was preacher for this village and likewise for the neighboring villages of Michlitz and Bothfeld. The perfect picture of a clergyman! With a talented mind and spirit, invested with all the virtues of a Christian, he lived a quiet, simple yet happy life and was respected and loved by all who knew him. His [....] |
